Translanguaging for Multilingual Immigrant Students

This professional development module is designed to help educators understand the importance of translanguaging in the education of immigrant-origin multilingual students. Through hands-on learning, participants will explore the benefits of translanguaging, which allows students to use their full linguistic repertoire for learning while having their cultural and linguistic identities centered. Educators will also identify ways to implement translanguaging pedagogy in their classrooms. To that end, this module covers the following themes:

  • Overview of Translanguaging for Multilingual Immigrant Students 

  • Understanding Translanguaging in Education

  • Planning for Translanguaging Pedagogy

 
 

Trauma-Informed Practice

This professional development module provides hands-on opportunities for all school personnel to learn how to support their students socio-emotionally through the use of trauma-informed practices. This module provides an overview of trauma-informed practices with a focus on immigrant-origin students. Participants will learn ways to nurture the social-emotional learning pathways of students who may have endured trauma as they heal and integrate into their new communities. To that end, this module addresses the following themes:

  • Overview of Trauma-Informed Practice

  • Recognizing Trauma: Supporting Immigrant Students

  • Strategies for Supporting Students Who Have Endured Trauma

 

CUNY-IIE has worked together with educators and community members to create professional development modules around the Supporting Immigrants in Schools Video Series videos: Key Immigration Issues, Immigration in Elementary Schools, Immigration in Secondary Schools, and Refugees and Immigrants in Schools. Each module features a set of activities and guides to help educators learn, act, and advocate in the classroom.

Key Immigration Issues Module

This professional development module provides hands-on opportunities for all school personnel to learn about historical and current immigration issues, and how they impact their school community. Stakeholders will explore ways to create a safe and welcoming environment, and to support immigrant students academically, linguistically and socio-emotionally. To that end, this module addresses the following themes:

  • Introduction to Key Immigration Issues

  • Humanizing and Understanding the Complexity of the Immigrant Experience

  • Understanding Key Immigration Laws in the United States

  • Closely Examining Current Issues Regarding Immigration and School Planning

  • Learning the Community - Breaking Down the Walls

Immigration in Elementary Schools Module

This professional development module supports educators in developing stronger relationships with immigrant students and families and collaborating with community-based partners to understand and advocate for their needs. The module also focuses on using children’s literature to discuss current immigration issues in a developmentally appropriate way. The goal of the following professional development module is to help elementary school educators hone their skills to:

  • Understand and develop relationships with their students and families

  • Learn about current immigration issues

  • Use literature to teach about immigration

  • Collaborate with community-based organizations

  • Advocate for immigrant students

Immigration in Secondary Schools Module

This module is organized around three main areas of focus for secondary educators:

  • Focus A: Supporting Immigrants in Secondary Schools

    • Includes resources for creating a school culture that supports immigrant-origin students for those who might identify as “beginners'' in this work and want to learn more about some steps they can take as a school to show that all students will be supported in the school environment

  • Focus B: Beyond High School: College Access and Career Opportunities

    • Provides an overview of federal and NY State policies around college acess and financial aid, especially for students who are undocumented. 

  • Focus C: Spaces for Youth Empowerment

    • Includes resources for starting a Dream Team or facilitating other youth empowerment activities.

Refugees and Immigrants in Schools Module

This professional development module includes a variety of activities and experiences designed to raise awareness, understanding, empathy, and competence among educators to address the educator actions. Most of the activities are adaptable for classroom use and can easily incorporate home language and translanguaging practices. The module is a step in the journey to better supporting refugee communities and also educating others about their experiences as well. The activities will support educators as they:

  • Dispel myths and misconceptions about refugees 

  • Engage families as valued members of the school community

  • Identify and assist refugee students who need additional support due to migratory traumatic experiences

  • Identify local resettlement agencies and immigrant organizations.

  • Build on the funds of knowledge of refugee students to develop an asset-based perspectives

  • Share powerful counter storytelling from multimodal sources about refugee students and families
